HISTORY

EXFILNA 2018. SEVILLE.

Seville is this year’s host of the National Philatelic Exhibition, EXFILNA, organised by the Spanish Federation of Philatelic Societies (FESOFI), which is holding its 56th edition from 31 October to 4 November, sponsored by Sociedad Estatal de Correos y Telégrafos.

To mark the occasion, Correos is issuing a new mini sheet.

With this stamp in your hands, you are holding a little piece of the capital of Andalusia. It depicts some of the most famous emblems of the city, such as the blossoms that perfume the orange groves of Seville. Carnations also feature, one of Spain’s favourite flowers, found on balconies and in buttonholes all over Andalusia. The Metropol Parasol, popularly known as the Seville Mushrooms, is a pergola-like construction of wood and concrete in a central square, Plaza de la Encarnación, and offering spectacular views of the city. We can also see the dome of the Church of La Anunciación, a traditional Seville construction type known as alboaire, clad in decorative tiles.

In the centre of the mini sheet is the Giraldillo, the sculpture crowning the Giralda, Seville’s landmark belltower. This figure represents the strength of faith. In its right hand it holds a large shield or banner which acts as a weathercock, topped by a staff and a cross, and in its left, a palm leaf.

This figure, the Giraldillo statue, is the central figure of the stamp and the mini sheet, as the entire sheet is a chalcography engraving, giving it the special touch the city deserves. Alongside the mini sheet is an Artist’s Proof with a reproduction of the stamp in rose gold.

Many collectors wait eagerly each year for EXFILNA and the special stamp that goes with the exhibition. This year the event is being held in the great city of Seville, which is welcoming with open arms this important exhibition and the philately experts and collectors who keep this uniquely satisfying form of collecting alive.
