HISTORY

TOURISM

Spain notches up yet another year of highly impressive results in terms of the number of visitors to the country.

The figures equate to 80 million tourists and 84 million Euros.

It is no surprise that this country is the perfect tourist destination, with all the elements to make it the ideal location for a short break.

Its first-rate transport infrastructure, a diverse climate offering sun and sand, snow and mountains, green pastures and the most enticing cities, place the country on the list of the most desirable destinations.

The Tourism philatelic series is issuing two new stamps depicting a selection of many of this country’s outstanding features.

The flip-flop makes us think of sun and seaside. Spain’s more than 2000 hours of sunshine annually draw in thousands of tourists who come here for our blue flag beaches, with almost 6000 kilometres to choose from. The stamp’s coloured borders bring those features to mind: shades of blue for sky and sea, of yellow for the sun and land, and green to symbolise the nature that provides Spain’s backdrop.

The stamp dedicated to inland tourism is represented by a hiking boot that takes us off to bucolic villages, woodland, high peaks, landscapes and snow. Overnight stays in rural tourist accommodation have increased by over 11 percent in the past year. Our diverse climate and the chance of combining snow with sunshine or of practising mountain sports have drawn in more and more tourists. The greens and browns on the stamp allude to mountainous and woodland Spain.

Last but not least, there is Spain’s high level of culture, with its hundreds of museums, its multitude of shows, World Heritage Cities, monuments, and most of all, the quality and warmth of its people.
