HISTORY

ASSOCIATION OF HISPANISTS

The International Association of Hispanists was founded in Oxford, England, in 1962. It is an open institution whose main objective is to promote research in the field of Hispanic studies, ultimately encouraging the exchange of ideas, methods and approaches developed in the different countries of origin of its over 1,000 members.

To fulfil this objective, the association organises conferences every three years. In 2019, this event will be held at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, making it the first Israeli site of this prestigious event.

Thanks to the generous support of the Duques de Soria Foundation, the association has also published a Bibliographic Bulletin every year since 1994. The Bulletin includes bibliographic information, news of the academic activities of the national Hispanist members over the year, and adverts for activities that will take place next year.

Every three years a directory including the research fields of each of its members and the events at the conferences is published.

Throughout its history, the association has had illustrious figures from the world of literature as honorary chairmen. This was the case for the first chairman, Ramón Menéndez Pidal, and his successor, Dámaso Alonso.

Hispanism is the study of Spain, Latin America and Hispanic culture in general.

Since the 16th century, everything new that reached Europe was done from Spain: newly conquered lands, new literary genres and figures, dances, fashion, etc. This created a need to learn and understand Spanish to satiate the curiosity and also to take advantage of the resources driven by commercial and economic interests. This need translated into Hispanism, which is as vibrant today, if not more.

The stamp dedicated to the International Association of Hispanists features an illustration of a globe with a small paper ship sailing on it, which harks back to the times when everything Hispanic dominated the world.
