HISTORY

CENTENARY OF FEDERACIÓN GUIPUZCOANA DE FÚTBOL

On 25 April 1918 the Federación Guipuzcoana de Fútbol (Gipuzkoa Football Federation) was officially constituted. The first Board of Directors was formed, electing Salvador Díaz Iraola as chairman, who a few years later, in 1922, would become the manager of the Spanish national football team.

The rest of the board was formed by C.D Izarra, Old Boys, C. D. Esperanza, Real Sociedad and Real Unión.

The Federación Guipuzcoana de Fútbol was created in response to the need to regulate football in Gipuzkoa, which required an independent federation.

1918 was a historic year for football in the province: as well as the foundation of the Federation, Unión Club de Irún beat Madrid to win the Spanish Cup.

One of the most important measures taken by the Federation was the creation of an insurance fund to take care of injured players.

The stamp marking this anniversary recalls the past of this institution with an image evoking the period when the Federation began. It depicts a pair of old-fashioned football boots and a ball on a bench, alongside the crest of the Federation. The story is summarised in the text: 100 años, milaka gertakizun /miles de vivencias 1918-2018 (100 years, thousands of experiences).

A century later, the Federación Guipuzcoana de Fútbol still works to further the interests of football in the province.

Its activities include the Trainers’ Academy, which teaches technical personnel.

It is also a strong supporter of football in schools, encouraging the sport for children and young people, along with the positive values it can provide.

The hundred years of history of the Federation have consolidated and confirmed it as a necessary asset for the clubs of Gipuzkoa, and for Spanish football in general.
