HISTORY

ANNIVERSARIES. Centenary of Valencia Club de Fútbol

18 March 1919 is the official date of the foundation of Valencia Club de Fútbol, one of the most successful football clubs in the history of Spain. It’s the fifth most successful Spanish club in terms of titles, with a total of 22 trophies, including 6 Liga championships, 7 Copas del Rey and 1 Supercopa de España. In European competitions it has won 3 UEFA Europa Leagues, 2 UEFA Super Cups and 1 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and is fourth in the historical ranking of the Professional Football League.

The Club was first formed by a group of amateur players in the city of Valencia, captained by Augusto Milego and Gonzalo Medina, who signed the deed of constitution of the team with the name Valencia Football Club. After its registration in the Companies Register, it held its first official board meeting on 4 April, with Augusto Milego and Gonzalo Medina tossing a coin to decide who would be President of the club - the honour went to Milego.

It began participating in the national league championship in 1928, its first year, starting the season in the Second Division, and earning a place in the First Division at the end of the year. In 1961 it took part for the first time in an international competition, in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

The team’s home stadium is the Mestalla, opened in 1923, moving there from Camp d’Algirós, which was Valencia’s first official stadium.

The Club has had many notable players, including the top scorer Edmundo Suárez “Mundo”, Antonio Puchades (Tonico), and Kempes, and trainers who marked some of their most successful eras, such as Jacinto Quincoces, Alfredo di Stéfano and Rafa Benítez, who led Valencia to win two Ligas and one UEFA Europa League.

The commemorative stamp issue marking the Centenary of Valencia Club de Fútbol takes the form of a mini sheet with one stamp and eight vignettes, printed with several innovative techniques, including silver-effect cold foil on the text of the deed of constitution, and blind pressing on the club’s original crest.
