HISTORY

SPANISH CINEMA. FERNANDO GUILLÉN GALLEGO

The great Spanish actor, who was head of the saga that helped to establish Spanish cinema, passed away in 2013.

Fernando Guillén was born in Barcelona in 1932. Despite the fact that his vocation was filmmaking, not having yet reached the minimum age to enter the Institute of Research and Cinematic Experiences (IIEC), he diverted his career toward the stage. He formed part of the Spanish Theatre and the María Guerreo companies, to then go on and create his own together with his wife, the actress Gemma Cuervo. He later developed his career in the Televisión Española TV studios.

In 1991 he won the Goya Award for Best Actor for his role in Don Juan en los Infiernos.

Apart from his acting roles in Estudio 1, he starred in many successful series, such as La saga de los Rius and Los Jinetes del alba.

In the world of cinema, apart from his award-winning role, he played some very important roles and won acclaim in films such as La estanquera de Vallecas, Ley del deseo (Law of Desire) and Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), both by Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar.

He was a great professional on the stage, perhaps not your average matinee idol, but conquering undoubtedly through his gaze and elegance performances.

The stamp, which pays homage to this great Spanish actor, features a black and white close-up shot of the actor, holding his face in his hand and staring directly at the lens, with his typical gesture that conquered the camera and the audience behind it.

The magic of cinema gives us the chance to experience and relive those stories that remain forever. That immortality of the cinema is transferred to the actors, who, thanks to their acting, will always be alive in their films.
