HISTORY

SPANISH CINEMA. GIJÓN/XIXÓN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The Gijón International Film Festival was held for the first time in 1963 to showcase children’s and young people’s cinema.

Currently, it is especially dedicated to alternative and auteur cinema, but these origins devoted to younger audiences remain evident, indeed, every year there is a jury composed of young people between the ages of 17 and 25 years.

Correos continues to support Spanish cinema, like every year, this time with a Premium Sheet dedicated to this internationally renowned festival.

The Sheet and also the stamp, feature the Festival’s logo, represented by three concentric circles that represent an eye that has been converted into the symbol of the Festival. An antenna completes the stamp’s design.

The Premium Sheet features some balloons about to be set off, that pay tribute to this part dedicated to children’s and young people’s cinema, popularly known as Enfants Terribles.

Next autumn this Asturian city will play host once again to filmmakers from around the world, who will compete for the awards in the different categories such as Best Asturian Feature Film, the Rellumes International Competition (awarded by a jury of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI)), the ALMA award for Best Spanish Screenplay or the novelty this year, the award for Best European Debuting Feature Film, a distinction awarded to one of the full-length feature film debuts with European production.

As well as Correos, the Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival dedicates its efforts to the dissemination and promotion of cinema, not only during the days of the festival, but throughout the year with various activities such as film series showing in their original version with subtitles

Spanish cinema is playing an increasingly important role, an example of this is the growing interest in festivals held in our country, chosen by numerous foreign production teams for their film shoots and even international presentations.
