ANNIVERSARIES. 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CREATION OF THE CASA DE AMÉRICA.
In 1992, the Casa de América was opened in the legendary Palacio de Linares as a legacy of the 2nd Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, and in celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the European Discovery of America.
Right in the centre of Madrid, in Plaza de Cibeles, next to other important buildings such as the Bank of Spain, the Palacio de Buenavista, current army headquarters and the Palacio de Comunicaciones, the Casa de América has become a meeting point for Latin Americans on the other side of the pond.
Promotion of the culture has been a fundamental aspect of the Casa de América since it was founded and this was clear in the schedule of its first year. That year commemorated the centenary of the death of Walt Whitman and that is why the Casa de América held various tributes to the poet from the USA.
Since it was founded, thousands of artists, writers, politicians, business people and representatives of the Latin American civil society have passed through its doors, which is testimony to the region's evolution.
The Premium Sheet dedicated to this institution portrays a detail of the door and the garden behind the palace. The stamp includes the image of the main façade of the Palacio de Linares, which started to be constructed in 1872 as the residence of the Marquis of Linares, who lived there from 1884. The architects were Carlos Colubí, Adolf Ombrecht and Manuel Aníbal Álvarez.
In addition to the main building, the garden is one of the most stunning parts of the palace. It is a garden in the middle of a large city, with a large marble staircase at the back of the palace, which is finished with a beautiful stone fountain.
One of the most striking details is known as the Casa de Muñecas. It is a small building with a unique design that is used to store work tools.
The stamp features a collage depicting some of the stamps issued by the Spanish post office with different Latin-American motifs, such as Gabriel García Márquez or Machu Pichu.
