HISTORY

EXFILNA 2019. SANTANDER

From 6 to 10 November, the city of Santander will play host to the 57th National Philatelic Exhibition (EXFILNA). This will be the first time the Cantabrian capital has hosted this major philatelic event, which this year will be dedicated to the sea.

Sponsored by Correos, under the Honorary Presidency of Their Majesties, the King and Queen of Spain, it will be hosting the best philatelic collections from Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic and other collectors, counting on the usual recognition of the FEPA.

Correos, which always participates with a lot of enthusiasm at this great philatelic event, is issuing a mini sheet featuring the Palace of La Magdalena, one the most emblematic buildings of the city of Santander.

The mini sheet depicts one of the building’s façades, with its characteristic decoration.

The stamp is framed in a lovely chalcography showing a detail of the main façade, which has seen more than a century of history pass through its doors.

In addition, continuing with this tribute the Cantabrian Sea, the mini sheet adds an acetate with marine elements taken from an image from at the Aquarium in the Cantabrian Maritime Museum, leading us to observe the Palace as if you were also immersed in the sea.

The sheet also bears the logo of EXFILNA 2019, which represents the tradition of a city that has always lived by the sea. A “raquero” (from the English word “wrecker”, typical Santander characters who made their living gathering coins thrown by tourists into the sea) appears in the foreground sitting gazing at the waves sat atop a bollard, which adopts the numeric form of the year of the event. These waves form part of the name of the city and in turn hit a lighthouse, the Cabo Mayor, which for almost 200 years has guided the different vessels to safety.

The Central Library of Cantabria, a former Tabacalera tobacco factory, will house some of the participants’ philatelic displays. On the other hand, in the Plaza Porticada (arcaded square) there will be a large marquee where first-time visitors will be able to enjoy the travelling exhibition Innovasello, which brings together some of Correos’ most innovative philatelic products from recent times. Also, the space will be uniting 63 stamps dedicated over the years to Cantabria as well as several stands with a more commercial, informative and educational theme, where visitors will be able to know and purchase Cantabrian products featured on commemorative stamps issued in recent years.

Among the many other surprises that Correos has is store for Santander, they have set themselves the massive challenge of postmarking a first day issue envelope under the sea!
