HISTORY

NOTABLE FIGURES. INDIRA GANDHI

In 1917, Indira Gandhi, one of the most influential women in history, was born.

The only child of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first president of independent India, she made significant advances in politics during the seventies, becoming the first woman to govern India.

From the beginning, she joined the fight for the independence of her country, led by Mohandas ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi.

Indira Gandhi stood out due to her progressive politics, which caused serious disputes even at the heart of her own party, and for her firm belief in strengthening links with non-aligned countries.

Her actions were instrumental in India’s armed conflict against Pakistan, and facilitating the birth of Bangladesh.

Indira Gandhi was respected throughout the world. She believed in socialism and secularism, and pursued a policy of peace and friendship with the rest of the world. She loved the poor and fought to change their situation. She wanted to free the world from hate and violence, always striving for a universal brotherhood and overall human prosperity.

She brought notable agricultural progress to her country, and worried exponentially about the serious hunger problem in India.

In June 1984, in an attempt to end Sikh terrorism, she ordered an attack on a Sikh temple killing 450 people. A few months later, she was assassinated by two Sikh members of her personal guard, who were linked to a Sikh terrorism organisation.

The stamp commemorating the centenary of her birth transports us straight to India with a watercolour depicting four women dressed in colourful Indian saris with their backs to us, and who appear to be looking at Indira Gandhi. A beautiful image of an Indian politician and activist who left quotes celebrated throughout history such as “Forgiveness is a virtue of the brave”, yet another example of her character and know-how.
