12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. A Coruña
The 12 Months, 12 Stamps philatelic series kicks off 2020 in the province of A Coruña. Printed in offset, the face value of the stamps in the series is enough to post a standard letter to any province in Spain.
The design of this series features a mosaic of images of elements that symbolise the province, which combine to represent its initials.
The letter A features the Torre de Hércules tower and the battlements of Vimianzo castle. The Torre de Hércules is one of the most unique and symbolic landmarks in the capital of A Coruña. Built by the Romans in the first and second centuries, it is the oldest working lighthouse in the world. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2009.
Also known as the Torres de Martelo towers, Vimianzo castle is a fortress built at the end of the twelfth century by the Mariño de Lobeira family. It has been listed as a Cultural Asset and currently houses a permanent display of arts and crafts.
The letter C features wood symbolising the staffs used by pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, the spandrel-shaped symbol of which decorates the tile shown next to the letter.
The lower half of the letter is formed by the rose window of the church of San Martiño de Noia. Consecrated in 1434 and built in the Ogival style, the church has a single nave with a pentagonal apse and a portico displaying the coats of arms of the kingdom of Castille and León and archbishop Santiago Lope de Mendoza, who sponsored the church.
The image forming the backdrop to the letters represents the dense foliage of the Fragas do Eume natural park, with the bridge over the river Sesín. The park has been declared a Site of Regional Importance, with its oceanic forests being considered one of the finest examples of a thermophile Atlantic forest in Europe.
The strip along the bottom is the colour of the provincial flag of A Coruña.
