HISTORY

12 STAMPS, 12 MONTHS. Castelló/Castellón

The province of Castelló/Castellón is the feature of March in the series “12 months, 12 stamps”, with some of its most characteristic elements distributed among the two initials that distinguish the motif of this series. They stand out against the panoramic background of the former papal seat of Peñíscola.

The first letter contains a detail of the cave paintings in the cueva de los caballos, located in the Barranco de Valltorta. An exponent of the Levantine cave art, the group of sites have been included under the heading Cave Paintings in the Mediterranean Basin of the Iberian Peninsula in the catalogue of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Following the shape of the letter you will see the bell tower of El Fadrí, constructed in the mid-15th century and separate to the co-cathedral of Santa María de Castellón, whose construction started in the 12th century. Due to its tumultuous history, only the three Gothic facades remain, one of which has been reproduced in the lower part of the two initials.

An orange blossom features between the two images, symbolising the cultivation of citrus fruits in region. This aspect is so important that the Mediterranean coast in the region bears the same name.

The cultivation of cherries has also garnered power in the region, where they are produced in the towns of Caudiel and Salzadella.

Next to the cherries is a detail of the facade of the Casa de la Vila, or Les Escaletes Palace, the current council building in Forcall, which heads the monumental complex it forms with the town’s porticoed square.

The stripe at the bottom of the stamp alludes to the colour of the provincial flag.
