HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. LLEIDA

Nature, art, gastronomy and adventure are some of the attractions on offer to anyone who visits the province of Lleida. A province born between the peaks, valleys and lakes of the Pyrenees, it flows through the Segre river and its tributaries to provide the territory with its shape and irrigate the fruit orchards surrounding the capital, ending up flowing into the Ebro, which caresses the southernmost point of the province.

The stamp from the 12 months, 12 stamps series portrays a mosaic of images, the charm of the province, providing the outline of the initials that are framed by this landscape offered up by the Aigüestortes i Estany Sant Maurici National Park, with the imposing peaks of Els Encantats in the background.

The two initials culminate with towers that allude to the Roman history and art of the Sant Climent de Taüll. The first tower, which was constructed in the 12th century, is part of the ensemble of Romanesque churches in the Boí valley, which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The second tower belongs to the former cathedral of Lleida, La Seu Vella. It is the city’s watchtower and bastion, built on the hill in 1203, and has watched over the city and its region for centuries.

The Modernist architecture, which is also present in the capital, appears in the first initial with the image of the facade of the Casa Morera, also known as Casa de la Lira, residence of the poet and politician Magí Morera.

The province’s gastronomy features the speciality of snails “a la llauna”, also referred to as “cargolada” and “cargols a la llauna”, which are cooked on a metal plate and served with alioli or vinaigrette. The tasting takes on a festive feeling during the “Aplec del cargol”, which brings together thousands of people every year to enjoy the speciality.

The feast can be washed down with some of the wines with the “Costers del Segre” Designation of Origin, whose wineries are dotted around the province, covering the mountain areas and also the basin of the Segre.

Within the economy's fruit-based economy, the pear also has a Designation of Origin seal, which protects the varieties of blanquilla, conference and limonera.

Finally, the ski boot represents the several ski resorts scattered across the Pyrenees and, by extension, the adventure tourism in which the province leads the way, with activities such as rafting, abseiling, paragliding, and much more.

The green strip on which the image features represents the colour of the province’s flag.
