HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. LUGO

The 12 months, 12 stamps series is paying homage to the province of Lugo, with a postcard of the region’s coast in which its initials are created from a mosaic of images capturing the landscape, architecture and food you can enjoy in the region.

Carved out of the Cantabrian sea, Lugo’s coast is a fragmented geography of river estuaries, capes and cliffs. It also offers incredible beaches, such as Las Catedrales, which takes its name from the vaults and arches sculpted in the rock by the wind and sea, as you can see in the stamp's background image.

The interior of the province offers a landscape of woods carved through by rivers, which man has decorated by building the unique “hórreos” (grain stores) dotted everywhere around the area, which you can see in the first initial. The conical thatched roofing gives away its origins in the Os Ancares region.

The two towers crowning the second image represent the sacred art you can visit in the province, with the Mondoñedo cathedral on the left and Lugo cathedral on the right. Both of these Romanesque buildings date from the XII and XIII centuries and are marked by many subsequent additions in a range of styles, including Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical.

The lower tower in the right-hand arm belongs to Lugo's Roman walls. These stretch for more than two kilometres and feature 85 towers. You can take a stroll around the historic heart of the city along the wall-walk, which is up to seven metres wide in places. The walls have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The stretch of wall that can be seen under the tower belongs to the medieval fort of San Paio de Narla, which was built in the XIV century and now houses an ethnographic museum.

The rich gastronomic heritage of the province is represented by Designation of Origin tetilla cheese, which is made from cow's milk to give a smooth and creamy texture. This is perfect to try with one of the wines from the Designation of Origin Ribeira Sacra region, produced along the banks of the Miño and Sil rivers.

The golden spandrel on a blue background represents the multitude of tiles marking the branches of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail that pass through the province.

Finally, the red stripe reproduces the colour of the provincial flag.
