HISTORY

EXFILNA 2020. CÁCERES

The National Philatelic Exhibition, also known as EXFILNA, has been organised every year since 1963 and is the most important philatelic event in Spain.

Sponsored by Correos and organised by the Spanish Federation of Philatelic Societies (FESOFI), this philatelic exhibition also has a competitive side to it.

Any collector belonging to one of the member societies of FESOFI is allowed to take part in the various categories, as well as Portuguese collectors with a maximum of two collections per participant.

Cáceres is the chosen venue for this year’s event. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, EXFILNA 2020 will take place online.

As it does every year, Correos is producing a special stamp issue to celebrate this important event for philately enthusiasts.

The mini sheet commemorating EXFILNA 2020 includes a view of the exterior and a close-up of one of the frescos at the Palacio de los Golfines.

This is the largest palace in the city of Cáceres, occupying the same space as about 20 houses. Its spectacular façade combines three different architectural styles: Gothic, Renaissance and Plateresque.

Two different coats of arms can be seen on the main façade: that of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, who stayed here whenever they visited the city; and that of the Golfines, which is supported by two angels.

The images shown on this fold-out mini sheet are produced using the intaglio technique in recognition of the careful and meticulous work of traditional engravings.

This issue also uses overprints, a rather unique feature and highly reminiscent of the past. Overprints were applied to stamps either to indicate a surcharge or to add, as in this case, an overprinted image that affected the design.

In this case, the design has been modified with an overprint that reads: “Exfilna virtual por COVID” [“EXFILNA online due to COVID”].
