MUSEUMS

This year, three new Spanish museums are the central figures of the series Correos dedicates to the temples of art, history and culture in Spain.

The first of the Premium Sheets is dedicated to the Museum of Human Evolution. Located in the centre of Burgos, it was designed by the architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg on a plot where the convent of San Pablo of the Dominican order once stood many centuries back. The museum was included in the declaration of the sites of Atapuerca as a World Heritage Site in 2015. The main aim of the Museum of Human Evolution is to preserve, map and disclose archaeological remains from the sites of the Sierra de Atapuerca. The façade of the museum is seen in the stamp’s motif, together with an image of the human skull known as Miguelón.

The Museum of Science and the Cosmos in Tenerife was founded in 1993, promoted by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands in collaboration with the Council of Tenerife. The museum was opened by the Russian astronaut Sergei Krikalev. The Museum of Science and the Cosmos offers its visitors a permanent exhibition including elements that invite people to participate in a cosmic adventure round the universe.

The stamp shows the museum square, where the large antenna of the radio telescope appears in the foreground. It is an icon that is best identified for its visual impact at great distance and where the coordinates of the Tenerife Mountains appear painted on the surface of the Moon.

The third Premium Sheet is dedicated to the Dalí Theatre and Museum. It was built on the remains of the old Municipal Theatre of Figueres and opened in 1974.

Conceived and staged by Salvador Dalí, its aim is for visitors to embark upon a true sensory experience, journeying to Dali’s peculiar inner world.

Visiting the rooms, you will be transported from Dalí’s first artistic impressions to his most recent, passing through surrealism, nuclear mysticism and his passion for science.

The stamp depicts one of his spectacular rooms filled with colour and mystique.
