HISTORY

BASIC SERIES. HRH King Felipe VI

Correos issues its Basic Series again this year, with two stamps priced for standardised national and international postage, Rate A and B respectively, and offset-printed.

As is mandatory, the stamp shows the likeness of His Majesty King Felipe VI on a background of miniatures of the Spanish Crown, in line with previous years. On the lower right of the image we see the letter “ñ”, the logo of the Spain Brand.

The Basic Series is a type of philatelic series found among almost all the world’s postal operators. It is mainly characterised by very large or unlimited print runs, issued continuously over long periods. Its design is repeated year after year, with only the face value and the colour of the motif changing.

It is issued to meet all the possible postage needs of current postal rates. In monarchies, the stamps usually depict the king or queen, while in republics they show allegorical motifs or other symbols of the state, such as a coat of arms or flag.

The portrait of King Felipe VI appeared for the first time in the Basic Series on 19 January 2015, one year after Parliament proclaimed him King of Spain.

The king of Spain, as defined in Chapter II of our Constitution, is the head of state and a symbol of the country’s unity and permanence. He acts as an arbitrator and moderator of institutions and represents Spain in international relations, with an especially important role with former colonies.
