COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS. CENTENARY OF CLUB ATLÉTICO OSASUNA.

In 1920, the people of Pamplona worried that the city might end up without a professional football team.

Luckily, the clubs Sportiva and New Club merged to produce a new team, called Osasuna. They say the agreement was finalised in Pamplona’s Café Kutz.

It had to wait until 1935 to reach the first division. Osasuna played the final match against Murcia and had to win. And so, with a 3-0 victory, the Pamplona team experienced its first promotion to Spain’s top football echelon. The winning team players were Urreaga, Ilundáin, Recarte, Ruiz, Cuqui Bienzobas, Urdiroz II, Castillo, Iturralde, Vergara, Paco Bienzobas, and Catachú, under the manager Emilio Urdiroz.

El Sadar was opened on 2 September 1967, a modern, comfortable stadium with capacity for 25,000.  However, the team’s early triumphs had been in the old San Juan stadium, created after Osasuna asked the Town Council for the land, and opened on 21 May 1922.

It made its European debut in 1985, but would not play a UEFA semifinal until 2007, when it lost to Sevilla.

After a few tough years, Osasuna arrived at its centenary with a place in the First Division and its accounts firmly in the black.

Correos is joining the celebration of the club’s centenary with a stamp. The background is a blurred image of the supporters.

A white ball with the logo created for the occasion, which recalls the club crest in the official colours, blue, white and blue, rather than the lion and chains, and the dates 1920-2020, the 100 years of the club.

This stamp expresses the spirit of camaraderie which the club has always been proud of, the atmosphere which always gives it the feeling of a group of friends playing and enjoying the beautiful game.
