COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS. CENTENARY OF DEPORTIVO ALAVÉS.

This year marks the centenary of Club Deportivo Alavés and Correos is issuing a stamp to celebrate, featuring the number 100 alongside the new club crest, designed especially for the occasion.

The new crest refers to the 1921 original. It shows a circle around the iconic pennant with the letters DA (Deportivo Alavés) accompanied by the figures 19 and 21, the year the “Glorioso” football team was created.

That year it began its sporting odyssey after changing its name from “Sport Friends Club” to Deportivo Alavés.

2001 saw one of its most historic moments, when it played Liverpool in the UEFA final, considered the best match of that year’s competition.

The 2000-01 season was a milestone for the modest club, which forged its reputation in Europe and was a great ambassador for Spanish football.

They were unable to win against the English team and were defeated by a golden goal. This bad luck dashed the hopes of the team, but although they did not take the trophy home to Vitoria, they won the respect of an entire continent.

Deportivo Alavés greets its centenary year in a solid position and ready to grow even more. Now in the First Division, it has earned other successes, such as taking part in the final of the 2017 Copa del Rey.

Its own junior leagues have been a successful investment for the club, providing it with fresh male and female talent which it trains in the Ibaia sports complex.

This stamp joins the many homages to the club in this important year, and especially to its supporters. Because centenaries are rare events, but this stamp will help this moment live forever.
