MUSEUMS

Three new stamps dedicated to three Spanish museums have been added to a series in which Correos encourages the dissemination of Spanish culture through these centres that safeguard, conserve and explain the history of humanity.

This year the featured museums are the Postal and Telegraph Museum, the National Museum of Roman Art, and the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture.

Postal and Telegraph Museum This museum holds one of the most important collections of philately and the history of mail and telecommunications. It includes the world’s first stamp, the Penny Black; Correos uniforms from every period; antique telephone switchboards; and even a replica mail train. The Correos stamp on this institution consists of a collage depicting some of its most iconic pieces, such as the lion’s head letterbox, and a Morse station.

National Museum of Roman Art. In the heritage town of Mérida, Extremadura, this museum was created over 175 years ago to reflect the importance of its Roman archaeological sites. The collections of the National Museum of Roman Art focus almost exclusively on objects found in Mérida. The main motif of the stamp is one of the galleries in the modern museum, designed by the architect Rafael Moneo. There we can see some pieces from the permanent collection.

The Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture. This entertaining and interactive museum, in the town of Briones, La Rioja, was created to educate people about wine. It has a permanent collection with hundred-year-old vessels, wine presses, and important artworks by such great painters as Picasso and Juan Gris. Outside, the Garden of Bacchus pays homage to the vine, with over 200 grape varieties from all over the world. The stamp shows one of the museum’s galleries, on working in wine cellars.
