History

CHARMING TOWNS. BÁRCENA MAYOR, CAPILEIRA, MIRANDA DEL CASTAÑAR, AND TORAZU.

Correos began issuing this series in 2016, to show Spain’s geographical wealth and highlight its many and varied charming towns and villages. Again, the four self-adhesive stamps imitate the style of old-fashioned strips of postcards, folded concertina-style and with the rear side also printed.

Bárcena Mayor (Cantabria). In the heart of Saja-Besaya Natural Park, next to the river Argoza, Bárcena Mayor seems to be lost in time, retaining the traditional values of rural Cantabria. The stamp shows a typical house of this town. These houses have wide porches giving access to a ground-floor barn area. The actual home is usually on the upper floor.

Capileira (Granada). One of the prettiest villages in the Alpujarra region of Granada is featured on another stamp. It shows whitewashed houses with the flat roofs, known as “terraos”, typical of the region, covered in a bluish earth called “launa”, which protects them from snow and rain. It is the closest village to the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, and at nearly 1,500 metres above sea level, offers the best views of the Poqueira gorge.

Miranda del Castañar (Salamanca). Located on a rocky outcrop surrounded by the rivers Francia and San Benito. The stamp shows Miranda de Castañar set in a green landscape with the tower of the castle among the roofs. Walking along these streets is like travelling back in time, to a medieval past of stonework, wood and granite. It retains an intact and complete town wall over 600 metres long with four gates leading to its historic quarter.

Torazu (Asturias). Among the mountains of Asturias, Torazu, with just 100 inhabitants, is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Here you can enjoy vernacular rural architecture and the beautifully maintained ancient barns or hórreos which document the area’s history. This magical place, with Celtic origins, treasures its local traditions. The stamp shows a view of its unique landscape.
