History

BASIC SERIES. FELIPE VI

The basic series is a philatelic series in which an unlimited number of stamps are put into circulation for a long period.

In monarchies, it is usual to find an image of the King or Queen as the main motif of such stamps.

Spain’s first basic series began at the same time as the first postage issue in 1850, with a portrait of Queen Isabel II.

The designs of the basic series in Spain have generally depicted the head of  state or allegorical motifs, depending on the period.

The basic series has also featured the temporary rulers of turbulent periods, such as Amadeo I, or even Carlos VII, pretender to the throne of Spain, on stamps issued in Carlist territory.

The basic series is designed to meet the most common postal needs, with the range of values required for posting letters, packages and other products with added value.

Sometimes, due to the yearly changes in postage rates, the value of the stamps in the basic series must be supplemented with what are known as complementary stamps.

The style of the Basic Series stamps has evolved over the years, from monochromatic designs to colourful examples, and even such innovative effects as Augmented Reality or printing with spot colours. Another important change to be seen over the years is from simple profile busts to three-quarter views or even whole figures.

This year’s stamp shows His Majesty King Felipe VI in civilian dress, with the new element of another image of the King, as a half-figure in full dress uniform as the Captain General of the army, superimposed over it.
